A Just Society
Social justice is a cornerstone of a sustainable society. Respect for and celebration of our province's ethnic, linguistic, sexual, gender, cultural and generational diversity underpins the Green vision and policies.
The NB Green Party recognizes the treaty rights of the Passamaquoddy, Mi'qmaq and Maliseet First Nations and will work with them to identify and remove the barriers that prevent them from realizing their aspirations. We will be full partners with them as they build vibrant, sustainable, culturally intact communities within the New Brunswick ethnic, cultural and linguistic mosaic.
Poverty in all communities is an overriding concern. The New Brunswick statistics on inequality are staggering. According to the Human Development Council, 1 in every 6 children lives in poverty; 58% of children living with a lone female parent are poor. Poverty isn't always a result of unemployment: 42% of poor children live in a family with at least one full time worker. The gap between rich and poor is growing.
We are all diminished by the presence of poverty amidst great wealth. The NB Green Party is committed to reducing the gap between rich and poor . This can only be done by identifying and addressing the root causes of economic and social injustice in New Brunswick. Job creation alone is not enough.
The NB Green Party supports a "living wage" so that any full-time worker would earn enough to stay out of poverty. We also support a basic income guarantee to replace the patchwork of social welfare programs. And we support pay equity for women in both public and private sectors. Our property tax reforms would lower housing costs including for renters. Universal public childcare is essential if women are to have equal access to the workforce and achieve economic indepdendence.
A caring society ensures that all people are fairly compensated for their labour, and can live in dignity with sufficient means to meet their needs and aspirations. Everyone should have equitable access to to the amenities which enhance our collective human experience—health, education, quality housing, meaningful livelihoods, and cultural enrichment. The Green Party is committed to this vision.
